Dosing and Recipes
We're so grateful you're here!
Dosing Guide:
Something important to keep in mind is that EVERY BODY is different. We have different sensitivities, health conditions, preferences, genetics, and a million other things that make us our beautiful unique selves. Below are recommendations to get you started. Experiment to find what works best for you! While it is normal to experience unpleasant sensations as stuck emotions move and are released by your body's inherent wisdom, if you experience regular physical or psychological discomfort, especially with daily drinking, we recommend you lower your dose.
- Full ceremonial dose: Ranges between 30g - 50g
- One packaged heart is 30g, on the lower end of the ceremonial dose but still with plenty of heart opening power!
- Meditation: 15g - 30g
- Daily drinking: Up to 15g
Marathon, or sprint?
If you are daily drinking small amounts, a marathon approach, it is important to not overdo it. Generally, cacao opens up our hearts and makes us more sensitive. So there is a period of time where we are adjusting to being more open and loving with those around us. Allow the cacao to be your teacher, teaching you how to live with an open heart each day.
If you are occasionally having a ceremonial dose, sprints every once in a while, we would recommend starting with once per week and not exceeding three times per week. Cacao in large doses can heal a lot and move a lot of energy in the body, so it is important to rest and integrate your experiences into your every day life.
We recommend having cacao on an empty stomach to feel the full effects, so either first thing in the morning or a few hours after a meal.
Recipes:
Cacao drinks can contain any combination of the following:
- Ceremonial Grade Cacao!
- Hot liquid - Plant milk (animal milk is not advised by tradition) or water to melt the cacao. Note: use gentle heat so you do not burn the cacao
- Herbs/Misc - For floral we recommend lavender and rose petals, for functional we recommend any of the medicinal mushrooms, maca, and ashwaghanda
- Spices - Sea salt, cinnamon, turmeric, cayenne pepper, saffron, ginger, clove, anise, allspice
- Sweetener - We recommend using a natural sweetener such as honey, yacon, or agave if you
Morning Ritual — for a daily cacao latte
10-15g cacao (1 heaping tbsp) / 1/4 tsp cinnamon/turmeric/cayenne pepper / pinch of sea salt / 300ml hot water (not boiling) / splash of plant-based milk.
It is common to add nourishing herbs and adaptogens, such as shatavari, medicinal mushrooms, maca or ashwagandha. I suggest researching which might suit your body and lifestyle before incorporating.
Mix for 20 seconds until frothy, serve immediately or pour into a thermos to keep warm for a few hours.
Iced Cacao — for hot days or an afternoon pick-me-up
In a blender, add:
40 g (around 4 tbsp) chopped ceremonial cacao paste / 1–2 spoonfuls of honey or a generous dash of maple syrup / pinch of sea salt / optional: cinnamon, other spices, or medicinal herb powders / 200ml hot water
Blend for 10 seconds on high to melt cacao and other ingredients together into a smooth paste, then add:
1 tray of ice cubes (approx. 12) / splash of plant-milk of choice / about 250ml cold water (or however much you find you need to top up to 1000ml total)
Blend again until everything is well-combined and smooth. Honestly, this is heaven-sent! If you’re feeling cheeky, try adding 1/2 frozen banana!
Make 2 big servings.
Meditation & Ceremony — ceremonial cacao for deep connection and practice
45g chopped cacao (about 2 tbsps) / 1/2 tsp cinnamon / pinch of cayenne / pinch of sea salt / 500–600ml hot water (not boiling) / intentions / prayers of thanks
Switch it up! By substituting cayanne and cinnamon with dried rose petals and lavander for a relaxing, heart-soothing experience.
